This is probably the most familiar of all Chinese herbs. The Chinese name for
it—"ren shen"—actually means "man root." This herb stimulates the immune system,
replenishes energy or "chi" (the body's vital energy), invigorates circulation, and slows
the aging process. Ginseng can be expensive and price often reflects the quality and potency
of the herb. The key to using ginseng properly is taking small amounts of the herb for
extended periods of time. Taking larger doses erratically is of little benefit. Also, refrain
from coffee, tea, soybeans, or turnips for two to three hours after taking ginseng.
